More than a hundred thousand people immigrate to the US each year. The process on paper seems simple, but many get worried about how long their application can take. Unfortunately, making mistakes can end up prolonging your process. Here’s everything you should be aware of:

Form N-400

The first step is dealing with Form N-400, which is the application for naturalization. On average, the Form N-400 application takes around 14 months. This is due to the huge influx of applications along with a fairly steady backlog of applications. This process is a huge overhead for the USCIS. The exact time for application processing can vary a fair bit.

Experts recommend you send out your supporting documents early, allowing the USCIS to review the overall application, which can lead to a faster case processing period.

Biometrics

A month after your citizenship application has been received, you’ll have to attend the biometrics appointment. The officials will collect your signature, photographs, and fingerprints. The information about when and where the appointment will occur is in Form I-797C (the “Notice of Action”), which the USCIS sends out.

The information during this process is used for verifying your ID and conducting a background check with the FBI. It’s recommended that you ensure that all your necessary documents like appointment letters and resident card should be available. If you fail to provide these, you may end up extending the application process extensively.

 The Citizenship Interview and Test

The citizenship interview occurs 14 months after the USCIS receives your application. You’ll receive details for your naturalization interview, along with any documents that you need to bring with you in a letter. Experts recommend keeping your mailing address updated and preparing in advance for the interview.

While you do have the option to reschedule, it’s recommended you try to avoid it. The US citizenship test takes place on the same day, so you need to prepare for English and civics.

Application Decision

If there aren’t any issues with your application, your application will be approved on the same day. You’ll receive Form N-652 (the “Notice of Examination Results”), letting you know whether you’ve been approved, continued, or denied.
